- ENSEMBLE INNTEGRAL | The Appoggio Method
Susanne Winter is a singer and voice teacher has founded a new ensemble. The Ensemble INNtegral. Ensemble INNtegral Classical Music Ensemble INNtegral The Ensemble INNtegral was founded by Susanne Winter in the springtime of 2023 in order to invite amateur musicians to free their instruments from dust and play together with other passionate musicians on a project-by-project basis. The mixture of professional and non-professional instrumentalists and singers creates an atmosphere, in which we motivate and encourage one another. The Friedenskirche in Burghausen provides a wonderful place to perform on a regular basis, In our concerts, we give the audience the opportunity to enjoy classical music with open senses and a very direct and vivid contact to the musicians. In order to create this atmosphere, we might present a musical theme or demonstrate special characteristics of a composition. Additional information or anecdotes about the composers facilitate the understanding of their music. We are convinced that classical music neither needs to be simplified nor watered down. Instead, we understand ourselves as an „entrance help“ to this precious musical genre that is both - deeply moving and entertaining! We like to share this very love and passion and we take delight in animating others to make music or sing together. We choose our programs according to the current players as well as their artistic level in order for everyone to participate - be this as a soloist or within the ensemble. Often, a motto arises - or we focus on a central piece of music. If you would like to join us, don’t hesitate - try it out! The Appoggio Method is an extraordinary effective and healthy singing technique. This naturally coordinated method was created by the singer and voice teacher Susanne Winter (soprano). SUSANNE WINTER SOPRANO HOME SINGING THE METHOD TEACHING SEMINARS BUY THIS INNTEGRAL From searching to finding As a teenager, I discovered my love of singing. Whenever I sang, I felt free, alive, and completely myself. I sang with an open mind, an open heart and complete trust in my voice. As my formal vocal training progressed, however, something began to change. The more I focused on mastering technique and improving my voice, the more I lost touch with the very thing that had inspired me to sing in the first place. This marked the beginning of a long journey—a search for the ease I had lost, for the joy of authentic vocal expression as well as the natural freedom of my voice. Along the way, I encountered an old Italian concept: appoggiare—"to lean." Not to push or hold, but to rest in something that supports you. Learning to let my voice lean into the body's natural movement of breath transformed my understanding of singing felt like a deep sigh of relief. At the same time, discoveries in anatomy, physiology and reflex science opened up entirely new perspectives. Gradually, these different strands came together and formed the foundation of my work. Above all, I came to understand the vital role of body awareness. Knowledge of anatomy alone does not change a voice. Lasting change happens when we move beyond intellectual understanding and begin to experience these connections directly in our own bodies. This is why the Appoggio Method combines scientific understanding with images, movement and natural vocal sounds. It translates the invisible into tangible experiences—and opens up the possibility for the body to reorganize itself in its own natural way. I hope that this approach helps people to rediscover the beautiful harmony between body, breath and voice—and delight in it. ABOUT
- THE METHOD | The Appoggio Method
Susanne Winter (singer and voice teacher) teaches the Appoggio Method - the art of singing. It is about natural functioning of the voice, working with plausible images, applying embodiment and using traditional belcanto exercises. It's a revolutionary technique. EMBODIMENT ART OF SINGING The Method A river does not need to learn how to flow. A plant does not need to learn how to grow. The Appoggio Method trusts the remarkable intelligence of nature within us.. It combines the experiences of traditional Italian vocal art with modern insights from anatomy, physiology, reflex research as well as the nervous system. More importantly, it transforms this knowledge into direct, embodied experience. The breath is our master key. Awakened senses and an ever-deepening awareness of the body are the keyhole. Each additional key opens another door—not through greater control, but through deeper awareness. Not through pressure, but by creating favorable conditions in which the body can do Not through force, but by creating the conditions in which the body can do what it already knows. Step by step, a deeper understanding emerges of how breath and voice naturally work together, allowing your voice to unfold into its own authentic sound. The keys of the Appoggio Method are not rules. They are invitations: to explore, to experience, and to embody. The keys Appoggio is about giving up the voluntary control of the singing process and replacing it by a natural self organization. For this we need 1) perceptive senses, 2) relevant anatomical knowledge, 3) skilled embodiment, 4) the art of intentionlessness and... 5) enjoyment. 1) When we start our vocal practice, we connect to our sensory awareness. By consciously opening ourselves to sensual perception, we clean the slate for new experiences, which is a prerequisite for growing and developing to the full. 2) Since we cannot see nor feel the main protagonists of our singing (larynx, vocal chords, diaphragm), it is helpful to have clear images of their anatomy as well as a distinct physical understanding of their functioning. I use rubber/fitness bands, (over-)balls etc. to clarify divers functions needed in the singing process. 3) Next we transfer the natural functioning of the voice in the art of singing applying embodiment and traditional belcanto exercises. Through these exercises and vocalises we gain and train the skills needed in the classical repertoire: equal sound quality, legato, effortless top register, suppleness. 4) Intentionlessness - easier written than sung - means not to interfere with the natural functioning of body, breath and voice. We are born with natural reflexes - breath and voice are two of them. Trying to control these inherently involuntary actions is doomed to lead to pressure, tension, inflexibility and serious vocal problems. This, in return, has a strong impact on the psyche. 5) We consciously practice in an explorative and playful way, because we are convinced that this attitude brings about enjoyment and serious progress. All this results in an effortless way of singing as well as a unique and authentic sound.
- UNTERRICHT | The Appoggio Method
Susanne Winter is a singer and voice teacher and trains professional and dedicated non-professional singers, who want to learn the basic principles of a natural vocal coordination. She also supports professional singers, who search for inspiration or have developed vocal problems. JOY NATURAL COORDINATION Teaching At the heart of my teaching is the Appoggio Method—a living approach that has evolved over many years and continues to grow. It combines the vocal ideals of the great Italian bel canto tradition with contemporary insights from anatomy, physiology, reflex science and the functioning of the nervous system. More importantly, it bridges the gap between knowledge and lived experience. Because I believe that understanding alone does not transform a voice. Lasting change happens when we experience these principles directly in our own bodies. It is with great joy that I guide people in rediscovering the natural connections between body, breath, and voice. Again and again, I witness how deeply rewarding it can be to trust the body's innate wisdom—to discover not only a freer voice, but also a deeper connection with oneself. For me, appoggio means trusting nature and remaining in awe of its beauty, diversity and wisdom. I like to think of myself as a voice gardener: Nature is the true teacher. Awareness is the key. All we need are favorable conditions in which to grow. Every person is unique - I find it endlessly fascinating to explore together the individual conditions that allow body, breath and voice to reconnect and flourish. I teach professional and dedicated non-professional singers, who want to learn the basic principles of a natural vocal coordination. I also support professional singers, who search for inspiration or have developed vocal problems. Testimonials I'm grateful and thankful for the trust and dedication of my students. Maria Katrivesi opera singer, coloratura soprano Working with the Appoggio Method, my singing experience has changed completely on how I sense my vocal and physical instrument. As a professional opera singer who also has a solid musical theater background, I was often feeling frustrated, because I couldn't be vocally consistent in my performances. There were my bad and good days - I didn’t know how to put into practice all the information about singing in my brain... Applying this method, everything settled inside of my brain and my body. I developed a clear vision of what I want to do and how to organize myself so it can happen. Connected to my senses, I have always a good or an excellent day, nothing less than that!! Now, after several years with the Appoggio Method I feel confident to pass this method on to my students. Dimitris Paksoglou opera singer, tenor I have been a professional singer for over 20 years and have studied with several famous coaches around the world. Coming across the Appoggio method, I was able to experience and use the connection of my my sound producing system towards my body = appoggio. As a consequence, I feel that I don't have to create or support my voice. The sound comes out naturally and effortlessly. Especially singing in the high register feels less stressful and more secure. Phillipp Maas choirmaster, bas s Being a passionate singer and a professional choirmaster, I was used to „support“ my voice with a certain tension from my diaphragm. This, however, caused an inflexible tone as well as the tendency to denotate. With the appoggio-method, I learned to sing on a continuous stream of air. By continually leaning into the diaphragm unit and the connectedness to my whole body, an effortless singing evolved. To sing in this way is above all a lot of fun! Online Teaching Welcome to my Online Classes! I have to admit that in the beginning, I was quite skeptical about teaching voice online - and was surprised at how well it works for many students. It has it's advantages! In my general classes, I explain a basic parameter and show a suitable exercise. I demonstrate how to practice it and you can freely try it out for yourself in the privacy of your home. Since nobody can hear you, the opportunity for a playful self-regulation arises- singing your heart out (or whatever you feel like in the moment), without the interference of a teacher. If you have a question, you can always ask for additional explanation. Since we often use props to clarify a function, I can visually check, whether you understood correctly what to train and how. In individual sessions, the online situation is particularly suitable to focus on a special topic, e.g. how to practice legato, a messa di voce, agility, triplets...and how to incorporate this in your literature. All you need is a computer and a room, where you feel free to sing. Check out the seminar offers.
- SEMINARS | The Appoggio Method
Susanne Winter (singer and voice teacher) offers a wide range of seminars. Check out the homepage! IN PRÄSENZ und ONLINE SEMINARE The word seminar comes from the Latin seminarium, meaning a place where seeds are nurtured to grow. This is exactly how I understand my seminars. As a safe and inspiring space where people are invited to grow, unfold their potential, and discover their own unique path. A place where each person's natural gifts are carefully nurtured—not shaped according to an ideal, but supported so they can develop according to their own nature. In this sense, I happily see myself as a gardener, guided by love. The Appoggio Method invites you to rediscover the natural relationship between body, breath, and voice. It brings together the wisdom of the traditional Italian bel canto tradition with modern insights from anatomy, physiology, reflex research, and the autonomic nervous system. Above all, it transforms this knowledge into direct, embodied experience. Just as every fingerprint is unique, every voice carries its own unmistakable identity. When body, breath, and voice work together in natural coordination, the voice is free to express who we truly are. Learning to trust the innate intelligence of our organism allows this authenticity to emerge. My seminars combine professional expertise with joyful exploration and embodied learning. They are designed for singers, teachers, choir directors, actors, speakers, and anyone who wishes to discover or deepen their voice as a natural expression of their personality. The focus is not on performance, but on awareness. Not on control, but on trust. Not on perfection, but on the joy of letting your own voice blossom. Seminars for Singers Still supporting… or already leaning? Together we explore the foundations of a naturally coordinated and effortless voice. Our focus is on reflexive breathing, a freely resonating throat, clear vowels and consonants, and a well-connected legato—the effortless flow from one tone to the next that allows the voice to sing with ease. Through body, breathing, and vocal exercises, we refine our awareness and create the conditions in which the natural coordination of body, breath, and voice can unfold. Anatomical and physiological principles become directly tangible through embodied experience and are put into practice in simple songs and vocal exercises. Please bring: Comfortable clothing Socks or indoor shoes A yoga mat (mats are also available if needed) For Choirs and Vocal Ensembles A choir weekend or rehearsal day offers a wonderful opportunity to discover the keys to a free, naturally coordinated voice together. Through body and breathing exercises, we refine our awareness and create the conditions for healthy, expressive singing. Using fundamental vocal exercises, we explore the natural relationship between body, breath, and voice. Participants experience how reflexive breathing supports the voice, how a freely resonating throat creates the conditions for a rich, vibrant sound, and how clear vowels, precise consonants, and smoothly connected tones naturally lead to a flowing, effortless legato. The underlying anatomical and physiological principles are experienced directly—not as abstract theory, but as embodied practice. Finally, we apply these newly discovered principles to the choir's current repertoire. The result is a choir sound that is supported not by greater effort, but by natural coordination, attentive listening, and the shared joy of singing. For choir directors The Appoggio-Method not only broadens the methodological repertoire of choir directors—it offers a new language for communicating the natural relationships between body, breath, and voice in a way that is clear, intuitive, and immediately experienced. How can the keys to naturally coordinated singing be applied to choral work? How can a free, resonant choir sound emerge—without unnecessary effort? Through a wide variety of practical exercises, we experience the natural relationship between body, breath, and voice, creating the conditions for an effortless, well-supported choral sound. Rather than relying on instructions that ask singers to consciously control internal processes, the Appoggio-Method works with anatomical clarity, embodied awareness, and vivid images drawn from nature. In this way, movement is no longer something the body has to control—it becomes something the body can organize naturally. This approach offers new solutions to many common challenges in choral singing: a shared legato, clear diction, well-coordinated final consonants, accurate intonation—especially in descending phrases—and an overall freer, more balanced choral sound. All exercises can be integrated directly into choir rehearsals and applied immediately to the ensemble's repertoire. The Professional Voice Speaking with Ease and Presence Whether we are teaching, leading meetings, giving presentations or speaking with others, our voice is one of the most important tools in our professional lives. Yet very few people are ever taught how body, breath, and voice naturally work together. In this seminar, we explore the foundations of an effortless, naturally coordinated speaking voice. Together we discover how a healthy relationship between body, breath, and voice leads to greater presence, clarity, and authentic expression. When the voice learns to rely on the body's natural organization—when it is allowed to lean rather than be controlled—we remain more deeply connected to our own feelings and can communicate ideas with greater vitality, clarity, and conviction. A freely resonating voice not only enhances communication but also helps reduce common signs of vocal strain, such as hoarseness, frequent throat clearing, and vocal fatigue. Authentic communication does not arise from greater control. It grows through deeper connection—to ourselves, to our breath, and to the people we are speaking with. ehr Verbindung – zu uns selbst und zum Gegenüber. Between Heaven and Earth – What Our Voices Can Express The voice connects heaven and earth within us. "Earth" represents the body, gravity, perception, breath, and our biological organization. "Heaven" represents consciousness, language, imagination, and meaning. The earth gives the voice its grounding. Heaven gives it direction and purpose. In this seminar, we explore the voice as a living bridge between consciousness and the body. We look at its development throughout our lives and discover how closely voice, perception, movement, breathing, and the nervous system are interconnected. Through direct experience, we come to understand that a free voice arises neither from the body alone nor from the mind alone. It unfolds where both meet in a dynamic and living balance. The Appoggio Method invites us to trust this natural interplay. The focus is not on control, but on connection. Not by doing more, but by developing a deeper understanding of the conditions in which our innate abilities can naturally unfold. Online Seminars Discover the Appoggio Method online. Learning to sing online may seem surprising at first—but again and again I experience how naturally, personally, and effectively it works. Whether in one-to-one lessons or in a group, I warmly invite you to discover it for yourself.
- SINGING | The Appoggio Method
Susanne Winter is a classical singer (soprano) for opera, oratorio, concerts and recitals. She is known for a natural and effortless way of singing and an intensive shining voice, full of overtones - both lyrical and expressive. SINCE MY CHILDHOOD BRANDING THE STAGE Text-to-speech function is limited to 100 characters Options : History : Help : FeedbackClose IS A CALLING About Susanne Winter I was born in Berlin and grew up in a family of musicians. At the age of sixteen, I discovered my passion for singing. After my first years of vocal training, I pursued my studies in classical concert and opera singing in the USA and Munich. At the beginning of my career, I devoted myself primarily to the concert stage. I had the privilege of performing at the Leipzig Bach Festival, Vienna's Musikverein, the Ludwigsburg Festival, the Ansbach Bach Week, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, and in many of Munich's leading concert halls. Opera soon became an equally important part of my artistic life. Invited by the renowned mezzo-soprano Brigitte Fassbaender, I joined the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck, where I performed roles including Giulietta (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier), Fiorilla (Il turco in Italia) and Titania (A Midsummer Night's Dream). As I gradually realized that my own artistic path was leading me away from the structures of today's opera world, I chose to focus on concerts and independent opera productions and teaching. At the same time, my search for a more natural and authentic approach to the voice gradually evolved into what is now the Appoggio Method. Listen to me... F. Schubert F. Poulenc R.
